Is Beverly Hills Becoming a Hotspot for Car Accidents?

What Data May Tell Us About Driving in the 90210

The Transportation Injury Mapping System (TIMS) from UC Berkeley compiles data from local law enforcement agencies to give a clearer picture of the varying kinds of collisions in different cities across California. As Beverly Hills only covers a 5.71 square mile radius, the data does not appear to be significant off-hand; however, when compared to larger cities close by (namely, Los Angeles, spanning 503 square miles) we can see that there is greater cause for concern.

Beverly Hills vs Los Angeles

From 2015 to 2020, with the most recently updated data, there were 2,284 total injury and fatal collisions in Beverly Hills alone. Among these, 3,122 people were injured and 9 were killed. Comparatively in Los Angeles, there were 116,841 injury and fatal crashes causing 173,325 injuries and 1,140 fatalities.

Accidents Per Square Mile

When analyzing accidents per square mile, Beverly Hills comes out to 400 within the selected timeframe, however, when looking at Los Angeles, there are only 232. This is shocking, not only because of the size difference in the cities but also considering the number of major highways that sprawl throughout Los Angeles, which would lead one to assume that there would be a greater number of accidents per square mile.

What Does the Beverly Hills Data Mean?

Considering the data, Beverly Hills accidents may be on the rise simply due to the high volume of tourism in the area. Notable for TV shows and being featured in pop culture, many coming to Los Angeles County likely have Beverly Hills on their bucket list.

Along with this, when looking at the traffic violations associated with the collisions, factors like improper turning and right of ways may be indicative of inexperienced drivers or those unfamiliar with the area. This is also highlighted in the number of pedestrian accidents shown, which makes up about 10% of the total collisions (same with LA).
